Spinal musculoskeletal disorders, particularly
chronic pain conditions affecting the spine, represent a significant and
growing health concern. These conditions contribute to disability, reduced
quality of life, and increased healthcare utilisation.
The Spinal Musculoskeletal Programme has been
developed in response to the need for a holistic, patient-centred care
programme for the management of chronic spinal pain. It is supported by two
processes:
Out-patient (non-surgical process)
The programme’s health coach identifies beneficiaries and completes a
questionnaire relating to the patient’s back pain, pain intensity, and the
impact on their activities of daily living. A treatment programme is then
pre-authorised in conjunction with the DBC (please see Additional Benefits –
Back and Neck Rehabilitation).
In-patient surgical process
Once a member has been identified as requiring in-patient surgical management,
a medical advisory referral is arranged so that the request can be reviewed in
line with evidence-based clinical guidelines. A basket of care is then
approved, together with in-hospital and rehabilitation care management.
